After the devastating Hurricane Hattie destroyed the former capital, Belize City, in 1961, the government was shifted to Belmopan in 1970. Who would have thought that Hurricane Hattie was to hit Belize on October 31, the last day of the season. Belmopan, the capital of Belize, is located in eastern Cayo. The Village Council Chairman at the time, Ramon Reyes, recounts that he and others dredged the waterway by hand after Hurricane Hattie opened a passage a few inches deep. The hurricane season in Belize extends from June to October. This made a practical water way between the west and east sides of the island, intended at first for dugout canoes. It was this hurricane that resulted in George Price, and the People's United Party (PUP) to relocate their Capital City from Belize City to the safer location of Belmopan.
